Apex Mountain in Penticton, British Columbia
If you are looking for a challenging and somewhat remote location for skiing or boarding, I recommend visiting and staying at Apex Mountain in Penticton, British Columbia.
Outside of being on the mountain at Apex, there are no frills. The resort is rather small and the dining establishments are less than exciting, however the skiing is the reason why you come to this resort. The runs are challenging and the snow is abundant and dry. Great conditions for screaming down the mountain.
You can stay on Apex mountain or at a bed and breakfast a short walk to the lift. We stayed in a bed and breakfast and the hosts were quite lovely. Every morning we woke up to a home cooked hearty breakfast and each evening we built a large fire, making it very inviting to curl up with a book and a bottle of wine to soothe our skiing pains. And then there was the sweet family dog which we took out on walks on very late, very cold nights after a bottle of red or two. The air is very crisp up in Penticton and the snow is dryer than you will find in the Pacific Northwest.
Apex reminds me of Snowbowl - another unique and challenging moutain where I was an avid snowboarder and skier in college. What I loved about Snowbowl is that there are no long lines, there are fewer amateur skiers and people are not there to be "seen", they are there to "ski".
